I will admit that the first week my son was there, and in particular the first day/night, I was absolutely terrified for him. I kept picturing him being jumped by a bunch of kids or restrained in a violent manner by the staff... You read the reviews on a place like this and it scares you. You look it up online and see scary headlines. However, almost every place where kiddos that require such a high level of intensive specialized mental health care is going to have very mixed reviews. Please remember that everyone has their own experience in this setting. Some reviews might be from former patients who did not do well here or disgruntled staff from ago. On 6/25/19, my son was admitted. That afternoon/early evening, I got a call from him and he was HYSTERICAL. He had already been in acute care, then rehab, and had been in CWOP while waiting for a long-term care placement. He had been doing so well... It had been about 107 days since we had to make the painful and difficult decision to pursue this route. It had been about ... 75ish days since we had a hugely emotional phone call from him. However, the phone call that day was complete TERROR and PANIC. I wanted him OUT... That day! Hell, that minute!! He has been there for 135 days now. He has never been so asymptomatic. It has been since about 5th Grade (he is now 17) that his grades were this good. He smiles. He thinks things through. He hasn't had an utter meltdown in a long time. Hector Garza has been wonderful for our son. Some of their rules are a bit ... 🤨 (phone calls home are once weekly and only for 5 whole minutes) but we also get to talk to him for awhile at other times during the week. The Therapists there are wonderful. He has had two due to one leaving for personal reasons and both have been truly invested in his future and have been SO accommodating when it comes to Family Sessions. I do recommend this facility. It can be wonderful. But, as is every place such as this, it IS what you make it. There is a star missing because of the air-conditioning issue this last summer... Do better!!
