I have been there many times over the years. I have not been 5150'ed against my will in many many years. I go there to get away and not screw up my life which is better than going there after I screw up my life. They last time was a week or so after the fires. I couldn't sleep and I went in to get away from my normal spot and got some med's to help me sleep. After a couple of days I was ready to go because their is really not much to do. You can draw but that's about it. They need more art supplies. So I left after a couple of days instead of the usual three days. I don't watch tv and besides they have a lame policy where everybody has to agree on a channel or the staff might just turn it off. That's lame. everybody? why? why not have a vote? .The Doctor's and counselors were great this time to me. They have a pay phone but no way to get quarters. They say call during the day at one's counselors office but they are either busy or not there it seams. And also one might want a little privacy. Would it really cost that much to have a toll free phone? to keep in touch with loved ones in a crisis situation. Sometimes they will make a call for you but it's a hassle. The most important thing that needs to change is the fact that some patients stay their forever. It's supposed to be a crisis type situation but because of whatever laws they can't get people out that need to be in a long term facility. This means a lot of people that are in crisis can not get in and end up messing up their lives or even ending up in jail. It's only like a 16 bed facility in a city of over 93,000 people in the first place! Another thing is last I was their there was only one book. They said someone tears up the books. Well it can be dealt with. Keep the books away from that person and get some books. They are not that expensive and there's nothing to do there. I mean there's an activities person there sometimes for like an hour or two but that's it. They have a real nice big yard but its all fenced off. Lawyers I suppose! no Doctor would do that. Another is they are one of the last phf's to let people smoke. I don't smoke right now but I may in the future and that's the last place one wants to quit is at a phf. They do a good job for what they have. I heard a lot of the clients stay their forever because it's way more expensive to send people to a State Hospital well that's lame because those are supposed to be emergency beds not long term beds but Butte County is hella cheap when it comes to mental health. Cheap man spends the most though. Dr. Wang runs it sometimes. She was my doctor for years and I know she is a nice person on top of being a very competent Doctor. Dr. Kimura ran it before her and she was a great Dr. as well. The phf is not a punishment it's and ER for your mind. One thing they could really do to make things better for patients that are awake is have more art supplies and let people draw at night if they can't sleep. I don't see why not they do at every other phf I have been to be it Corporate run, Government run or privately run. Even if a client draws on the wall once in awhile it's worth the trade off. Straight dope old sport.
